What to do with seaweed stranded on the Calvados coast? In our Saint-Lô laboratories, we are studying their valorization in partnership with the University of Caen. On June 11th, a delegation of local and regional officials including Clotilde Eudier, the Regional VP for Fishing, Forestry and Agriculture, came to visit our laboratories to get an insight on our work. Up to 5000 tonnes of seaweed are stranded on the nearby beaches in Grandcamp-Maisy (Calvados) each year, costing from 40 to 60000 euros to the local community. In its lab, Algaia studies stranded seaweed samples in terms of quantity and quality in view of valorizing them for agricultural purposes or in the emerging bioplastic industry. To be continued.
